South East Championships

Christ’s Hospital, 22nd/23rd August 2015

After the briefest of summer breaks, tournament action returns to the Rugby Fives calendar this weekend. Organiser Ed Hatton has just published the draw for the singles tournament at the South East Championships, and it looks like being a superb, high-quality affair.

Throughout the draw, there are interesting matches right from the very first round, where Old Wykehmaist Ben Chua will face his former teacher Giles Munn; meanwhile, in the second round, regular doubles partners Julian Aquilina and James Tilston will clash.

However, if the seedings hold true, the final will bring together the game’s biggest rivals, Will Ellison and Dan Tristao. Both are playing in this event for the first time, but they come to it in good form: Will has regained top spot in the rankings after winning the South West Championships last month, while Dan is returning to the country fresh from winning a title at the World Wallball Championships in Canada.

Don’t think that another Will/Dan final is a foregone conclusion, though. With three other Top 10-ranked players in the draw – last year’s finalists Ed Kay and David Butler, as well as Ben Beltrami – not to mention National Number 12 Tom Maconie, it looks set to be a classic event.

If anyone is worried about the lack of a doubles draw, there’s no need. The South East Doubles Championship runs in the same format as the President’s Cup and Scottish Open, where the pairs are drawn on the morning of the event, partnering the top-ranked players with the mere mortals who sit lower in the rankings, and taking into account the results in the previous day’s singles championship.

We’ll have the results on here as soon as possible after the event, but you can keep up with the latest news via the RFA’s Twitter feed and Facebook pages.
