NORTH WEST OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Manchester, 17/18th January 2015

Oganiser John Beswick has now published full details of the North West Open Championships, which are to be played this coming weekend at the Y Club in Manchester. On the courts where he won his first National Singles Championship just over a month ago, Will Ellison is the defending champion in both the singles and (with John Minta) doubles.

However, it’s clear that whoever wins these events will have to work very hard. Not only are more than half of the last 16 from the National Singles back in Manchester, they are joined by the likes of Ed Kay, Jacob Brubert, Tom Dean and Ben Beltrami, all of whom will trouble the best players. In fact, such is the quality of field that it will be quite an achievement to win the Plate!

Similarly in the doubles, we look set for a fine competition. The defending champions are top seeds, and are seeded to meet current Under 25 champions Dan and Ed in the final, but neither pair will have an easy route to get there. Indeed, neither can be sure of getting there at all.

It gives you some idea of the class of the field that the relatively veteran partnership of Alex Rew & Jim Hughes will face the hitherto untried (but looking very good on paper) pair of Marcus & Richie in the first round; and, the ‘prize’ for the winners of that match is to face the top seeds in the next round!

Meanwhile, partnerships such as Aquilina & Parker, Dean & Beltrami, Butler & Russell, and Arnold & George – to say nothing of former national champs Beswick & Roberts – will ensure a superb tournament, with the winners impossible to predict.

Full details of the event are available by clicking on the link below, and we’ll have a full report and results online as soon as possible after the tournament. But, if you want to keep up with events on- (and quite probably off-) court over the weekend, follow the RFA’s Twitter feed.
