NATIONAL VETERANS’ CHAMPIONSHIPS
Marlborough College, April 4/5th
Organiser John Hawke is now accepting entries for the National Veterans’ (over 45s) Championships, as well as the Masters (over 65s) and Grand Masters (over 75s) Championships.
All three events are making a return to Marlborough College this year. To be held over the weekend of April 4/5th, the Veterans tournament will include both singles and doubles championships. Matt Cavanagh is the defending singles champion, while in the doubles it’s John Minta and Dave Fox (above). The Masters and Grand Masters events will take place alongside the Veterans singles championship on Saturday April 4th.
Qualifying age for the Veterans is 45 years on or before 4th April 2020, with the Singles event completed on Saturday and the Doubles played on Sunday. There will be Plate competitions for those eliminated in the early rounds each day. Players interested in taking part in the Doubles, but lacking a partner, are very welcome to submit their names and contact details, and John will make every effort to match them up with a compatible partner.
The organiser is keen to point out that, to take part, you don’t need to be a star player. The event is set up to give players as much Fives as they can stand, with numerous plate and other competitions, and the energy used whilst playing can be replenished by consuming the copious food provided by the organiser and his helpers.
The school and the Marlborough Fives Club make all the players very welcome. On the Saturday evening, the club also organises a meal at a local restaurant, which is usually a well attended event, with wives and girlfriends being wholeheartedly welcomed.
Entries for the various tournaments must be received by Wednesday 1st April. For full details, click on the link below to download the official entry form, or click on the link at the bottom of this story to send an email to the organiser.
