British Universities & Student Fives Championships

St Paul’s School, Barnes, London, Friday-Sunday November 16-18th

Organiser Theo Parker has published the draws for the 2018 Student Fives Championships – and it promises to be a fascinating weekend of Fives. The draws look very open, with no clear favourites for either title, and all we can be sure of is the fact that there will be new names on the trophies this year.

That’s because the Cambridge students, who have dominated the event over the last few years – Ed Kay, Matt Shaw (above) and Ben Beltrami – have all now left the university, and no one in this year’s draw has won a title at this level before. However, there are several tournament-winners in the event, and this year’s tournament brings the intriguing possibility of this year’s student champions being the same as in the recent Yorkshire Open – something that we feel sure has never happened before.

Top seed in the singles is David Butler – who won the singles title in Giggleswick and is also the current Scottish Open champion – while Ollie and Arnold and Theo Parker (twice Yorkshire Open champions) are top seeds in the doubles.

However, it’s perhaps going too far to say that any of them are the favourites, with a very good entry for the weekend. There will be 38 competitors in Saturday’s singles and 18 pairs in the doubles event the following day, with a total of 12 different universities represented.
